Meeting People Where They Are

Nearly twenty years in the nonprofit sector, now spent across two companies and a dissertation. Vocational rehabilitation, career counseling, and community engagement: three routes through the same question.

Portrait of Joseph Amodeo

People arrive knowing more about their own lives than any assessment will tell me. Most of my work is vocational rehabilitation, walking alongside youth and adults with disabilities as they decide what work they want and how to get there, usually inside systems that were not built around them. The teaching and the dissertation come from the same place: how a practitioner sees a person shapes what that person is ever offered, and most of us never examine it.
